    I would recommend spacing the plants somewhere between 12 to 14 inches apart.

    Yes, you can place outdoors, but make sure it is in a filtered light location.

    Direct sunlight will burn the plant.
    You will need to adjust the watering if the plant is outdoors.

    The leaf tips turning black could be due to temperature changes.
    This is a tropical loving plant, so cold temps can cause this.
    Well draining soil is important. Over watering can cause issues.
    Dracaena don't like salts or fluoride in water, so using distilled water can be a help.

    Spike plants belong to several species: Dracaena indivisa, also known as Cordyline indivisa, and Cordyline australis. I don't think they can be divided, but they can be propagated by cuttings. Cut a young shoot from the main plant, remove all but 2 or 3 leaves, and root it as described in this article:
