I've had a seed pod for about 5 months. It's a reddish hue and there has been no change in all this time. How much longer will it take to open up? is there something I can do to hurry it along?
You can help the process along by adding a little potassium. This can help speed up things just a little... but there isn't much you can do, except wait for it to start splitting. My desert rose looks healthy but, the flower buds are pink and they have started turning brow, could it be a fungus? I remove the buds.
If I knew the answer, I would not have asked you the question.
I had the most beautiful desert rose that got caught in an unexpected freeze.....I have left him alone for the winter and not cut anything back to see if he survived....should I trim back the dead flowers to the trunk part? I have continued to water all winter
It would have been best to leave it unwatered for the most part. The only thing that you can do is wait for new growth to return if is still alive. If after a few months you don't see anything, then it would have to be assumed that it is dead. You will know the dead from the living parts, as the live growth will be flexible. The dead growth will be brittle.
When & how do you prune a desert rose plant?
Usually, you will not have to do this. You can prune dead growth out, or prune to take cuttings, but this is not necessary for its health. I would do this during the time that it is not actively growing or after the flowers fade.

at what time or season should i prune adanium plants. Can it be done in spring when it is flowering?what is the best way to prune? Thx.
It is best to wait until the plant stops flowering. Winter when the plant is not actively growing will be the best time. Or anytime after flowering is also safe. Just use clean shears, and cut to your preferred shape. You may want to dab the cut with peroxide to keep it from getting infected, once every day for a week or so.

I bought a Desert Rose last Spring in 2017 and it did great outside on my porch. It flowered beautifully off and on all Summer. When the weather started turning cold, I brought the plant inside and I took all the precautions it suggests on watering and keeping in a relatively sunny space, etc. but, alas, it has lost most of its leaves and, although it has gotten new growth, off and on, it usually turns brown and falls off. I try not to move it around and it gets as much sun as my windows will allow (and the weather in PA allows) but it still does not look good! It is still alive, I believe but I'm not sure for how long. Should I just start over with another plant?
No this is completely normal for this to go into a semi dormant state. This is typical when they are far outside of their natural climate. When it warms back up, this will recover just fine.
I think my desert roses may have frozen this winter. How can I tell if they are going to survive or not?
You can bend the tip just enough to see if it is brittle, or still has some life. If it seems bendable, then you can scratch the bark with your fingernail just enough to see if there is still green underneath. This will indicate that it is still alive. It will likely recover if it is.
