Sago palm? I was given the plant about 5 years ago. It has very slowly grown a couple of fronds. Over the past fortnight, it has grown a "spike" with little offshoots. This has grown about 1 inch a day. It looks like these might produce tiny flowers and then seeds. I have been unable to find a picture or information about this "spike". Any ideas of what is happening?
It is a Sago, but that is not the flower. That is a new frond unfurling, and it is signalling that it does not have quite enough light! Even when it does flower, it will not produce seeds. Male and female flowers reside on separate plants, so you would need both for that to happen.

I have a dog and cat and read that this plant is dangerous for animals so I don't want it in the house. I live in central Missouri so winters are very unpredictable. Please advise, thank you.
Does your garage have a window for sunlight? If so, you can try overwintering it there as long as it stays frost free. Same on the shed if it stays above freezing and has a window for light. Do you have a room inside that no one uses and the door could be kept shut, keeping the pets out? Maybe you have a basement the pets don't frequent. Do you have a nearby friend or relative who would keep it for you over winter?

One of my sago palms grew extremely long fronds that did not turn into any thing but long fronds with little ball like things along the sides of the frond. There were about 8 of the long fronds. What is that all about? They are inside plants with great light
Those odd growths are the new fronds reacting to low light. Locate it where it gets a few hours of full sun or brighter light than it is getting.

Greetings! Earlier this year I bought a sago palm on clearance (yay!). About a month later a skinny growth appeared...it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s now about 15+\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" tall but looks NOTHING like the fronds. There are tiny \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'curly-cue\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' things on the entire length of the growth. What the heck is it?
It is, in fact, a frond. It is, however, lacking light. If you cannot put it in full sun, then you may need a grow light of about 100 watts or greater to put over it.
