Grow in fertile, well-drained, soil with abundant organic matter. Thrives in a sunny spot but will still bear colorful flowers and keep their delicate color longer in the shade.

There are many varieties of Clematis, and perhaps this is the type of leaf on your vine.
Excess Nitrogen can also cause large and heavy leaf growth with little flowering.
