I have a very bushy plant with dark brown leaves and feathery white flowers that blooms in late summer through the fall. I had always thought it was called a chocolate plant, but after looking up the words "chocolate plant" they did not look like my bush. It spreads easily. I would appreciate any help. Entering a Garden Club competition tonight and I guess I won"t be able to enter it unless I can find someone who knows what it is.
The vines appear to be stunted. Have attempted to send pics several times to no avail.
That is quite odd. It sounds like a perfect environment. It is unfortunate that a photo will not upload, since that may give me a hint at what is going on. All I could recommend from this point is to have your soil sampled. This will help you to find your local extension service to do so: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/extension-search
This article will help you with their care: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/vines/chocolate-vine/chocolate-vine-plants.htm
Without photos, and a very detailed description of the plant, its surroundings, care, and climate that it is exposed to, it would be very difficult to give you a good answer.
Please include some more information, and I will be more than glad to help.
Climate is humid...in Colonial Heights VA. Sandy/loan soil. Acidic soil. Drains well. Partial shade with afternoon sun. Planted near a small water fountain. Leaves look reasonably healthy. Plants have been slow to produce new growth. Have attempted several times to submit pic, but always fails on website.
Vine suitable for pergola?
Planting in container will be the ONLY method for controlling roots. You will still be left picking seedlings as they start, or trim the flowers before they go to seed. It is important to keep up with this maintenance, or it will take over and become your worst enemy.

My chocolate vine has heat or sun damage from an extreme heat wave recently and some of the leaf's are starting to dry up and I have been watering it and watching it but I am wondering if I should prune it back.
You can prune at any time since chocolate vine is a fast grower. Trimming back the scorched leaves would improve its appearance. Here is more on their care:

nder or damage shingles? I am in zone 6b and the garage is facing west Thank you so much for any information!
It may not like the afternoon sun. It does best in part sun away from the heat of the day. Here are more ideas:
