1) I can't get a lot of the dirt off because so many roots and new sprouts. I have way too many and don't have the time to scratch the dirt off. Can I just put them in paper leaf bags the way they are as long as the dirt has dried out? 2) I dug them up before the frost got the leaves. Will this make a difference in the outcome next spring? 3) Can I cut some of the roots off of the bottom to help air out the dirt?
It is best to dig the Canna up from the soil when the first frost has killed off the foliage.
This article will help you with winterizing.

I live in Louisville, KY. Do I have to dig up my canna for winter storage? Thanks Patti
Canna Lily are hardy in zones 8 thru 12.
Louisville KY USDA Zones are from 6a to 7.
You will need to lift and store your bulbs.

I live in Minnesota; this is my first year to store the bulbs. Is there a temperature limit in this storage? Inside a heated house in winter with the furnace running is limited to the lower temperature because of the heat. If I store them in the garage, there are times it will be in the 20s when the weather gets really cold. What is your best suggestion for them to stay living in my storage areas? Please let me know. Thanks, Tom Theis.
About 40-50 degrees is the best temperature to store canna bulbs, but if this is not possible you can store them elsewhere. I think it is more important to prevent them from freezing, so don't store them in your garage.
If you have room, you can store them in the refrigerator. Otherwise, indoors in the coolest spot in the house (away from the furnace) would be the best place for them.
When should I plant canna bulbs? I live in Southwestern VA.
Canna bulbs should be planted in spring after your last frost date.

It's 32° outside, and I didn't get my bulbs dug up. Is it too late?
Go ahead and dig them up. Even though the temperatures are near freezing, the ground is still quite warm.
Clean and cure them. If they are soft or show signs of damage you can toss them.

What is the best time of the year to transplant cannas in the Dallas, TX area?
If you live in a warm climate, transplant the Canna's in the early spring--just before they leaf out.

I have a pink canna that won't flower. The foliage is healthy but it hasn't flowered for about 3 years. I have other colors and never have a problem, as they flower every year, but for some reason the pink one won't. What can I do to get it to flower? Thanks
You could have to much Nitrogen in the soil. This would result in lush greens and no flowers.
You can increase Phosphorous by adding Bone Meal.
Here are some links for you.
