I have a small pot with many new growths. They remind me of new mushrooms growing. However, they are not mushrooms. They have a stem with a tiny head. There is a card in the pot saying it is a Caladium plant. I do not remember having such a plant in the house. Someone may have put the card in the wrong pot.Know this is not much information but would really appreciate some help here. Do not know how to send a picture as I cannot find the tiny plants on-line.
Caladium seedlings would look like many seedlings, Light green small double leaves. It very well may be a fungus growing in the empty pot. This is common.
Do caladiums seed? What do the blooms look like?
Yes! This article will explain this process.

I have planted calladium and elephant ears for the first time. I live in area 6b, and have a friend who leaves them in the ground all winter, but I have read they should be dug up. Not sure what to do.
Caladium will have to be wintered indoors. They will not survive in your area, outdoors over winter.

Some Elephant ears can survive, depending on the type, that far north. Most won't. You will have to know that it is a cultivar that will survive outdoors, but a simple mulching will do for those types.
For most Elephant Ears... You will need to winter them indoors. This article will help; https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/bulbs/elephant-ear/storing-elephant-ear-bulbs.htm
The article on website says the leaves fall off in winter but as a houseplant this doesn't happen. My caladium has become quite leggy and I want to cut it back now winter is here. Is this ok to do? the leaves are still on the plant. thanks
A caladium is programmed to grow in summer. You may be able to keep it a couple of months indoors before the plant goes dormant. It is unlikely to form new leaves during this time. Dormancy is inevitable and has to occur in order to trigger growth in spring. Its favorite growing conditions, hot and humid air, are hard to come by in winter, even indoors.
bought some very small caladium bulbs and have now grown leaves but there just small green leaves, do bulbs need to be a certain size to have the colorful leaves? thanks
The larger the bulb, the larger the leaves. The colors should be the same as what you purchased. Always purchase from a reputable vendor.
This article mentions the sizes of fancy leaved caladiums.

The old bulbs still in there. Should I use new dirt?
I would use new dirt and just dispose of or compost what was in the pot last year. You likely will find when you dig in there that it is full of roots and/or critters and not so hospitable for another plant. However, if you remove the old bulbs and most of the soil is fine, go ahead and use it with added soil to increase nutrients.
