This is the first time I have ever grown broccoli and it looks ready to harvest, except the actual 'head' is just tiny- maybe only an inch or two wide. It looks nothing like the kind you buy at the grocery store. Did I do something wrong, and should I still cut it? The florets are about the size of a match head?

I have beautiful foliage on my broccoli but it is not heading out. Can you tell me why?
Too much nitrogen. These articles should help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/broccoli/bolting-broccoli-growing-broccoli-in-hot-weather.htm

I bought some seedlings in April and the heads are flowering. The heads look thin; not like the firm one at a grocery store.
Most likely the heat. Broccoli needs cooler temps to grow properly; otherwise, the plants will bolt. These articles should be of some help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/broccoli/how-to-grow-broccoli.htm

The plant may have too much nitrogen. This will result in lots of leaves but no head. Try giving the plants some bone meal. This will help tone down the nitrogen and give the plants some phosphorous, which will help with head formation.
Can you eat the leaves of the broccoli plant?
I've started my broccoli and eggplant under remay (agri-ribbon) fabric. The plants are huge and healthy and pest free. Is it okay at some point to liberate them from under the fabric. Are they strong enough at this point to live out from under? The eggplants are under the same cloth trying to outsmart the flea beetles. Will these also have to spend their entire lives under the fabric? I understand the eggplants have to come out when their flowers need to be pollinated. What to do?
In addition to what you are already doing, the following article may also have some suggestions for you to try. In addition, treating the plants with neem oil may help. I set out 6 young plants of Broccoli. One is starting to bolt and produce yellow flowers. Can it still be saved? If so, what do I do? Also, do I need to blanch these by wrapping the leaves over the head?
Unfortunately, once broccoli bolts, it quickly becomes inedible. This article will help you with planting it in the future:

Broccoli does not require blanching.
