Have an older black walnut tree in the backyard. Last year no fruit and this year despite all the other trees already blooming, this tree only has a fee buds on it as of May 14. It looks healthy otherwise. Not sure on entire history of the tree, as I have only owned this property since Oct. 2013. It was actually still providing fruit when I moved in! It was very messy. Just making sure this a normal process or if it needs something like fertilizer. Thanks.
This is a normal process. Black walnuts are alternate year bearing – one year they have a large crop and the next few nuts/fruits. Black walnut trees are late bloomers compared to other types of trees and its potential for nut production also hinges largely on the climate/weather as temperatures below 26 F can kill emerging buds and pistillate flowers. I hope that helps.
Why would my walnut tree shed its nuts early? They are falling all over the yard, but not mature.
If there's not enough water or nutrients getting to the tree, this could cause them to drop. The tree can't sustain all the walnuts so it sheds some, so that it can focus its energy on its roots and continued new growth. If you have squirrels and chipmunks, don't forget they knock off walnuts as they jump between branches. Some years you'll have a smaller crop of walnuts, that's normal. I have a gigantic black walnut tree in my yard, and some years I've had hardly any (or almost all of them fell early), other years I've had tons. If the branches and leaves are healthy with no signs of pest or disease, it shouldn't be anything to worry about. These articles may help you determine whether there's something actually wrong with the tree or it's simply thinning itself a bit so that it stays healthy:

Are the leaves from the Black Walnut tree toxic in my flower beds?
The leaves certainly can cause issues or even kill some plant material.
It is best to clean up the leaves and dispose of. If one or two leaves fall into the flower beds, it should not be an issue. A cleanup in the fall after the leaves have dropped is generally a good idea.

I believe I have BLACK WALNUT growing. How long before I see flower/fruit? The age of tree, etc? Are they a self pollinating type tree? Thanks
Black walnuts will not produce fruit and nuts until they are 10 years old. Black walnuts will sometimes self-pollinate, but this is inefficient, so more than one tree is required for optimal nut production.

My horse chewed the bark off a big and old BW tree. Since the bark isn't smooth or green inside like other types of trees, is it really damaged? The tree seems to be fine.
Most bark damage will heal on it's own.

My tree has started to grow some new leaves, but nearly all of them seem to be dying. Why is this? Photo attached. Thank you.
I am not sure, but your walnut tree may have a root rot disease or another root problem leading to these symptoms. Please see these articles and check your tree for the symptoms:

we would like to put a border of some sort on our property but there are numerous walnut tree any suggestions?
I would advise you to talk with your County Extension Office to get a list of trees recommended for you specific region.

Without your growing zone and area, I can't make any suggestions.
