Q. keep beach grass healthy and spreading

What is the best way to keep my beach grass healthy and spreading? My beach grass has a LOT of thatch in the center of the plants. Is it better to leave it or remove and add some sand in the bare spot? It’s on a sloping dune.

Besides from pulling up as many as possible, I am afraid that any treatment would harm the grass as well. You can use boiling water but this will kill the grass as well. It would just not make the soil toxic for future planting.
