I have my little herb garden in about 8 hrs of direct sunlight / water on drip system every 12 hrs for 5 min each time. I have sprayed with NEEM to keep the bugs off the plants. My basil is not doing well ~ droopy leaves, some leaves are turning black on the ends and curling up. What am I doing wrong?

Certified ExpertA.You are watering too often for a short period of time. Water less often (try every 2 to 3 days and see how they do) but longer for deeper saturation.

Does sunlight need to be direct sunlight or, just in a window sill? My windows all have awnings and we get zero direct sun. I could put them outside to get direct sunlight, but it still is hot here in northern Indiana and I do not want to burn the leaves. Thanks Jim

Certified ExpertA.It should grow roots in water on your windowsill even if it doesn't get full sun. Once it is transferred to soil, however, it needs direct sun if possible, if you are growing indoors.

PragueQ.Drooping basil
So I just recently sowed some basil seeds and they germinated. Then I plucked some of the plants out to give the sprouts more space to grow.(I used to have way to many plants next to each other) Today I woke up to this.(See in the picture) What's going on? Not enough light? Not enough water? Too much water? I know I wasn't supposed to sow them at this time of the year but I hoped it would be ok. What can I do?

Certified ExpertA.It is best, when thinning, to snip the extras with sharp, clean pruners. Pulling will disturb the root mass which will cause what you are seeing. That paired with just a little too much water will cause this, and the eventual rooting of roots. It is good to keep in mind that basil is fairly drought tolerant, so underwatering is much better than overwatering.
It will be best to only plant one seed per cell, to the best of your ability, only cutting extras without disturbing the root.
From here, you will probably want bright lighting, as window lighting won't be quite enough. You can sustain a single large basil plant on about 100 watts of horticultural grade lighting. Stay away cheap LED's with only 2 band spectrum. They need 12 bands of light to be, truly, efficient.

SarasotaQ.What kind of basil is this
I started with 100 seeds but the packet just said basil on it.when I started maybe 40 actually sprouted. Then they all died but one. the leafs look like sweet basil but it doesn't have a smell to it. It doesn't taste that sweet either. I taste basil but very mildly.

Certified ExpertA.The smaller plants are basil, but that large one is not. It could be one of many solanaceous crops (many of which are toxic, but do include peppers, sunflowers, tomatoes, etc.) or an amaranth.
The smaller plants in that container probably smell stronger, and taste normal. The large plant shouldn't really have a strong smell or taste, since it isn't basil.
As for what kind... That's going to be very difficult. They all resemble each other very closely. It could be one of many, many hybrids, or standard cultivars.

October 31, 2019Q.What kind of fertilizer should I use for yellowing leaves?
My basil leaves are fading in color and I think they need fertilizer. We've had a lot of rain recently and I think all the good stuff has leached out. Should I use epsom salts for plants diluted in water (for nitrogen), cow manure, crushed eggshells (for calcium) or a slow-release granular fertilizer like Osmocote?

Certified ExpertA.We don't recommend certain brands, but a general, all-purpose slow release fertilizer works well. You can also use fish emulsion or diluted water-soluble fertilizer.
