Can I cut babies from a large barrel cactus? I want to cut them and then plant them.
Use a knife and pry off the pups from the mother cactus.
Lay the cuttings in the shade so that the cut ends callus over. Bright sun will burn the pups.
The larger the cutting, the longer it will take to dry. When the end is dry (gently push your fingernail into the end, it should be hard)
The plant the pups into a well draining potting mix. Water but not over water to cause the pups to rot. Allow to dry between waterings.
Roots should form in 6 months.

I have three small barrel cacti in pots. I need to winterize them. I live in Prescott, Arizona at about 5,000 ft elevation. Can I leave them outside for the winter, or do I need to move them indoors?
It looks like you are in gardening zone 7, while barrel cacti are only winter-hardy in zones 9 and warmer. Therefore, I recommend bringing your cacti indoors for the winter.
I have a barrel cactus. Research says it can withstand temperates as low as 15 degrees for short periods. I live in zone 8. That's the middle section of South Carolina. Winter temps can rarely drop to 10 degrees. I was hoping to plant it outside and cover it when temps dropped below even 30 degrees. Most winter days warm up to 50 or 55. Often, winter days get into the 70s. Can I plant it outside? Cactus is about 15 by 15 inches now. About 15 years old. Thanks. Waiting your reply. Stephen
I think your plan will most likely work, although there may still be some risk of the cactus being damaged by cold. Also, avoid watering your cactus in winter, because absorbing more water may cause it to become more susceptible to cold.
If your cactus does happen to be damaged by cold at some point, see the Frost Damage section here:

I have noticed the skin at the bottom of my barrel cactus is starting to yellow and wrinkled. The cactus receives morning sun only, as it sits by a window facing east. I water it about once a month in winter months and bring it outside in summer months. I fear it is starting to rot and eventually die. What am I doing wrong?
Your Cactus may be suffering from root rot.
You can try lifting the cactus and repotting in a sterile cactus soil mix.

I have an older barrel cactus that has never bloomed but has put out two babies from the top center. Mother Barrel seems dormant, but the babies are the size of oranges. Do I remove them and pot them up? Leave them alone? Will Mother plant die? HELP! Thank you, Richard Lucik.
Yes, you can remove the cactus babies, known as "pups," and plant them, usually without harming the mother plant. These articles will explain how:

I live in NE Oklahoma , more specifically west of Muskogee , I have a barrel cacti in a pot that I move out doors in the spring . Could it stand to be planted out doors permanently ? And if it needs winter protection what type should it be ?
Your Cactus can only survive brief periods to freezing temperatures and is hardy to zones 6.
You are in zone 7a , so your cactus should be ok year round for winter. If the weather is particularly cold, you may want to add some protection with a garden blanket.
