I would like to grow black bamboo in three large pots on my balcony. I like the shape of the bamboo in the three pots in the photo - i.e. low and wide. How would I achieve that? Thanks

V9G 1A2Q.How and when should I split a potted black bamboo
It's in a 15 x 15 pot and seems to be pot bound...I need to keep it in a pot so what size and when should I do it? Thanks! Marni

Certified ExpertA.Usually, when you split it, you will put it back into the same container. The rest will be put somewhere else. You will just want to use fresh soil. If this is indoors, then it doesn't matter when you do this. If this is outdoors, then this is best done in Autumn or Winter.

Certified ExpertA.I think the photo with the article below has thin stalks. It seems to depend on the variety. Widths vary up to more than 8 inches. See if you can find the variety you have and what the expected width will be. Here is general care:

Certified ExpertA.Yes, dried leaves make excellent mulch! If the leaves are large, you might want to run the mower over them to make them smaller so they don't compact and prevent moisture from getting through.

October 12, 2019Q.maintenance of outdoor bamboo
we own a home that 30+ years ago we installed a small thicket of bamboo(3-4foot). it is now 60 foot long after trimming. Someone came to trim it down and cut it down and back. it now looks like just bamboo shafts. what would happen if I were to have it cut down to about a foot high, would it effect next years growth? Thanking you in advance.
