Symphyotrichum oblongifolius plant is healthy and growing, but it has never bloomed. It is several years old, receives full sun and regular watering. Planted next to bugle weed (which is monitored for invasiveness) and two bell flowers, which are all healthy and bloom appropriately. Zone 3/4, Buffalo, Wyoming. thank you.
It's possible they're being over-fed. Also, be sure if you pinch them back to reduce height, stop by early summer.

Hi, Would anyone be able to identify this flower please ?
This flower shape is present with, both, Asters and Thistles. If the leaves have spines then I would be inclined to say Thistle. If the leaves are spineless, then I would be inclined to say that it is an Aster species.

I have 6 asters planted together with only 6 inches between them; they have grown and now have very little space between them Can I lift and split them and then replant with more space
Absolutely! This article will help with how and when to do this:

They do get green in the summer and bloom in the fall every year. but I forget if I have ever cut them back. LOVE this site!!! thanks
Yes. As part of your spring cleanup, you can cut back all summer and fall blooming perennials that weren't cleaned up in the fall. I wait till spring to cleanup to give plants an extra shield against cold weather and in case any butterfly caterpillars are overwintering.
Just cut it to the ground, avoiding any new foliage that may be coming up.
I have a bed of white asters that open in the sunlight & close about 4.00 pm. What is the name of the plant?
I couldn't find any reference to an aster that closes at night, but Michaelmas daisy is a popular one in Australia.
n prior to planting . Thankyou.I I have put in the Bin 8 plants now would you advise me to get rid of them all or wait to see if they are infected.Cant upload a picture as I have none on file.
You can wait to see if they all have it, because it's possible the leaf hopper skipped a few plants while feeding. Only the plant material is infected and can only be transmitted by a leaf hopper injecting his saliva into the plant.

My sister needs to have year round greenery at her place, so do asters keep their leaves all winter?
No, asters are deciduous. I have a cousin in nearby Illinois that has an evergreen Golden Mops (a.k.a. Chamaecyparis pisifera, or Sawara cypress). You can also use ground juniper, also called Common Juniper, Old Field Juniper, Prostrate Juniper, Juniperus communis var. depressa.
