I planted a new bed of asparagus this past spring. All are looking very well, with tall heavy top growth. They are continuing to send up new growth, with a lot of new sprouts continuing even now. Weather man says below freezing next week. As I understand, this will end this seasons growth. If I harvest some of the new growth a couple days before the freeze, will this harm the plant in any way? -------- I plan on waiting a few days after the freeze, expecting the plants to die back, and then cut off the growth just above the ground. Then I will cover the entire bed with grass clippings and straw, a couple of inches. Is this the correct treatment for them? TNX
Cutting any from a fresh planting would definitely be a mistake. I would hold off for three years or more before making your first harvests.
They need this die off period. As this happens, they are taking nutrients out of the stalks and putting them back into the plant root system to store for the next year.

I have planted this in raised beds and have amended the soil to what I think they need, but obviously, I must be totally wrong. I have researched on the web also, but nothing seems to work.

My 2nd year asparagus plants are experiencing late season spear growth (I assume due to the heavy amount of rain we have received throughout this growing season). They will not have enough time to become ferns. This is a new plot and we will not start harvesting spears until next year as recommended. However should we remove these late forming spears in order to keep them from sapping energy from the roots?
Since you aren't supposed to harvest till the third year and then not after July 1, I would leave them.

I can't seem to get rid of these beetles... they somehow found my asparagus garden after 3 years and now they constantly "return" every year. I have tried safers "end all" to no effect. The only thing I noticed is that the larve cannot seem to survive if the foliage is dry (they tend to dry out). Anyway I am in Ontario and am wondering if anyone can provide me with an effective way to get rid of these pests as they are difficult to spot and constantly pick off (part of their defense is when you go to squish them with your fingers they intentionally "fall off" the plant so they can climb up at a later point. They also multiply quickly..
They can be a bit of a hassle, can't they? Here are some articles that will help:

I have to wait until it starts to go dormant. Do I keep watering the plants???
It should be established enough to not have to water at all at this time. They don't take long to take to the soil, and will only need watering once completely dry.
You can safely stop all watering until Spring. Even then, when you resume, it should only be during very dry conditions. You should still allow the soil to dry thoroughly down to 2 or 3 inches between waterings.

My asparagus bed is all heirloom plants and seeds itself, which results in new small plants every year. Should ALL the spears (mature and new sprouts) be cut during the harvest season, or should the new sprouts be left to grow to maturity during the harvesting season and beyond?
Ideally, with heirloom cultivars, you will want to prevent them from seeding. If this is not possible, only harvest the older shoots. You will want the younger shoots to mature for a few years before harvesting.

We planted asparagus last year and need to know if there is a limit to how long they can be harvested? Also, what is the best mulch to use and fertilizer.
Two to three weeks at this age is what's recommended.
