leaves falling off fig tree – is this normal during winter in Phoenix?

We planted a fig tree this summer in Phoenix. It has had fruit on it consistently since we planted it but not a lot of leaves (it has a very ‘Charlie Brown’ tree look). The figs are not ripening and will fall off. Over the last two months it’s been slowly getting new growth leaves. However, just this week the leaves have all been falling off. They haven’t really changed color. Is this normal or might we have an issue? Thanks!

It is hard to say in your area. On one hand, figs do go through a dormant stage in winter and in cooler regions would normally lose their leaves. And sparse leaves are not unusual for a fig tree. My own container grown one only gets leaves on the very tips of the branches and is pruned for maximum fruiting, which gives it a bit of a crazy umbrella look.

But, you are in a warmer area, so the tree may lose a few leaves during this season, but should not be shedding them wholesale unless you are experiencing unusual cold.

I would not be too concerned yet, but as a precaution, I would treat the tree with neem oil or some other fungicide and pesticide combination. This will address 90% of any issues that could be causing the leaf drop if the leaf drop is not just a normal seasonal reaction.

Thank you! We did have a cold frost for about 7 days in a row 2 weeks ago, so that may have caused some of the shedding.

But I will take your advice and use the neem oil just in case. I appreciate your response, thank you again.
