Are strawberries annuals or perennials?

Strawberries are perennials; however, they are often planted annually. Strawberries treated as an annual crop involve planting a fresh batch every year, to be dug up and discarded after harvesting. Otherwise, strawberries can be overwintered and will regrow each year.
