Sticky Rain from our Oak Tree

We have a large Oak tree in our garden that covers most off the patio and part of the house. Over the past month we have noticed that it seems to be raining a sticky substance all the time, which is covering everything from the car, bicycles, garden furniture, clothes on the washing line and windows. I have read that it could be honeydew from aphids. How long will this go on for? What can we do to stop it from happening, as our family is also breathing it in? Thanks

Yes, it does sound as if your tree may be infested with tree aphids.
Here is a great link with how to treat the infestation.
Neem Oil is a great treatment.
