Q.Standard Rose doesn’t flower
The leaves are whitish and it has never flowered. I have had it about 2 years and bought it on line. This year the leaves at the top are still whitish and there is a shoot coming out at the bottom which looks healthy. But why I bought it was because I wanted a tall standard rose with roses at the top! I thought that this year if it doesn’t bloom I am just going to throw it away. Is there anything I can do to get it to flower at the top?? Thanks

The good news is that the top part of this grafted creation is still a rose. Many times the top part of tree roses dies and the bottom part takes over usually coming up from the bottom of the rose tree. Prune out any bottom growth as that is not and will never be the desired rose. It will only help to weaken the upper desired part of the rose tree. It looks like the rose tree is sick. It also needs some thinning pruning as it is way too tight with foliage wrapping in and around itself which only helps with getting disease going. Just take out some of the twisted and wrapped around canes. Then apply a product with a fertilizer and systemic pesticide. Once the granules have been applied and worked well into the soil, water the rose tree with water that has a plant vitamin tonic in it and a tablespoon of Epsom Salts per gallon of water. Water the rose tree with a fresh batch of this water mix the next 3 to 4 times it needs watering. If the rose tree is in a pot it will help to buy a larger pot with drainage holes and transplant the rose tree. If it has been in the same pot for a couple years, it could be getting root bound.
