squash – setting on of fruit

I have some squash/pumpkin type plants growing out of my vegetable garden (sprinkled with some of my last year’s compost this spring) which I did not plant. I thought they’d be fun to grow and they have been (right now some are at least 20 feet long along my back fence). They have lots of blossoms, but I’m not seeing any fruit set on anywhere. Can’t even tell what they are! I looked up the leaves, and they have to be a squash of some kind. I’m assuming the pollination process is having trouble! Do I continue to just let them grow and hope a fruit will happen? What exactly has to happen for pumpkins to set on?
