Spruce Tree Living In A Container.

I have a small spruce tree in a container on my deck. It came from my yard. I dug it up so I could save it when the landscapers were cleaning part of my yard, It is now under the balcony so rain or snow will not reach it. I live in Vermont, I believe it is zone 5.( zip code 05301) I want to take proper care of it. I believe it would be ok to water it when the soil is dry. But I wonder if the water might freeze and cause harm? Do you have any suggestions? One person told me to take it indoors and let it live in my basement, not a lot of sun there. Thank You for your time, sincerely Patti.

Generally, there is not a whole lot to know about these trees! They, almost, grow themselves. There are a few things to be aware of-

In container, you need good drainage. Make sure that water can leave the container, freely, and that the soil is well draining, though they are not picky about the type. Make sure that the soil does not remain dry for extended periods. Feeding can be done once or twice per year by adding fresh soil or compost to the top, or by repotting the tree.

Other than this, they will survive partial shade to full sun, and should handle the cold with no problems.

Here is an article for general care of Spruce, though this one would be a dwarf cultivar. It is the same care.
