Splitting

Can you split broom even if it almost looks like a tree now? It’s about 5 to 6 feet high and way overgrown. It was here when we moved in about 4 years ago and has completely taken over the spot and either needs to be split or cut way back, hoping for the splitting though. Please let me know and, if so, is that done now in spring? It has just bloomed.
