Spikey Sucker Growth

I had a lovely yesterday today & tomorrow plant & after it bloomed I noticed it wasn’t producing new limbs. So I trimmed it back & now all I am getting are sucker growth that are not showing growth for buds. Long lanky limbs but no buds. What did I do wrong. Thank you.
