Something Killing My Squash Plant

I have a vegetable garden. Among other plants, I planted green peppers and buttercup squash. Both were doing beautifully. One day I noticed one of my pepper plants had limped out, as if it was starved for water, so I watered it. . . which didn’t help. I noticed it still limp and leaning. So I went to prop it up and it had been eaten at the base and no longer was connected to the ground. The same thing is happening to my squash plant. One day I went to look at it and it was covered with ants, which I don’t know if they are the reason for this condition. I sprayed it with liquid Sevin, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. I also noticed that the roots leading into the ground were now exposed. My neighbor thought it was earwigs, but the literature I have read said they are harmless. Would you know what could be causing this to be happening, and do you know what I can do?
