Soil under apple tree

The grass under my 50 year old apple tree is thin and spindly. The tree produces lots of great apples, and I would like to know how to make the soil and the tree better.

Grass under trees has a hard time for 2 reasons. The first is the tree shades the ground and the second is that the tree “drinks up” significant amounts of water, which leaves little for the grass.
