Soil Under Apple Tree

The grass under my 50 year old apple tree is thin and spindly. The tree produces lots of great apples, and I would like to know how to make the soil and the tree better.

Grass under trees has a hard time for 2 reasons. The first is the tree shades the ground and the second is that the tree "drinks up" significant amounts of water, which leaves little for the grass. This article will help with improving the grass under the tree, but you will likely never get a lush growth of grass under the tree:
