Smell of lantana plant

Very strong unpleasant odor. What is the purpose?

Some people do report they they find the smell of Lantana offensive.

Most people do smell the sweet in the blossoms. Bees and Hummingbirds love them; so they are a wonderful pollinator to the garden.
