Smell from Indoor Palm tree

I have got a palm tree which has large stalks and a couple of their leaves went brown so I pulled them off and it opened the top of the stalk slightly and I could see like a brown marrow. There is a very bad smell coming from the plant now and I wondered if there was anything I could give the plant to kill the smell? Apart from the smell, the plant is perfect. Any suggestions?

The bad smell is likely root rot, likely from overwatering.
Unfortunately it may be a problem that will cause the death of the plant.
