Small Tree Mishap

I was trimming shrubs today and accidentally stepped on a small tree. I cut a slanted piece of stem off the bottom of the plant and planted it back in the ground without any root system. Do you think it will grow new roots and live?

It really depends on the tree. What kind of tree was it? Let us know and we can advise on what to do.
