slugs and snails

I got an e-mail stating that slugs and snails would be repelled by putting cut cucumber slices in an aluminum pie tin. It’s just the opposite. They are coming in droves. I’ve been setting the cukes/pans out every night at dusk and then go out about 10 p.m. to check pans to see what I’ve caught. It was fun at first, but I’ve been doing this for probably 2+ months now, and I’m still averaging 75+ nightly (last night it was 150 and counting). I am wondering where on earth they are coming from. Is my yard a breeding ground? Am I a slug and snail enabler? What should I do now? They’re also still eating my plants and also eating the cukes in the pans. Should I throw out some and quit putting out the cut cukes in the pie tins? I’m baffeled at what’s going on! Have I started something that I will never be able to finish?

Well, it certainly sounds as if the cucumbers are attracting the slugs, rather than repelling them. Were these meant to be traps instead? At any rate, I would definitely forgo using the cukes as it’s obviously not working in your favor.
