There is a large slash in the trunk, it is pretty mature. Do I cover the damage?

No, covering it will allow infection to take over. It needs to be exposed to air so that it can dry out. This will help protect it from infection. You will want to clean and disinfect the wound, though.

You may want to put something around the trunk to prevent something from doing this again. If it removes the bark from around the whole tree, it will die.
