You can prune them, but do NOT do it now. This should be done in the spring time. Pruning them now could potentially kill them over winter. Here is an article that will give you more information:

Also, it isn’t necessary to put anything on the cut stem. If you would like, you can wipe the cut area with peroxide ever few days after the cut until it hardens.
