Should you mulch your new asparagus bed to help control weeds?

We have planted two year old asparagus crowns early this spring. We are now trying to control weeds – we pull and hoe. My question is can we mulch the bed much like we do the vegetable garden?

Many people have found dead leaf or straw mulch to be effective on the asparagus bed. This article has some more information also: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/asparagus/cutting-asparagus-foliage-back-in-autumn.htm [1]
