Should the bottom of a gardenia be bare or should it have leaves?

I have a 30 yr old plant that is in the ground. Not sure of the pruning of the base area…

This is common for older gardenias. Restorative pruning will be necessary to restore its health. You will need to do this at the correct time, though.
