Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comMy 2nd year asparagus plants are experiencing late season spear growth (I assume due to the heavy amount of rain we have received throughout this growing season). They will not have enough time to become ferns. This is a new plot and we will not start harvesting spears until next year as recommended. However should we remove these late forming spears in order to keep them from sapping energy from the roots?

Since you aren’t supposed to harvest till the third year and then not after July 1, I would leave them.
