Q.Should I Separate Crepe Myrtle Saplings?

Zone 32507 | Elizabethkeeney added on May 12, 2024 | Answered

I found a group of volunteer crepe myrtles under my very large crepe myrtle tree. I thought it was one but when I dug it up, it had about 6 separate trunks and roots. When my husband transplanted them, he planted them all together since that’s how we found them. I’m thinking they will grow better if we separate them. Should we dig them up again and separate them or will they grow better in a clump?

These sound like adventitious roots that are sprouting up. This clump IS likely one root system. If you can, it is better to separate them to make it easier to maintain shape.
