Shefflera new leaves turn black and die

I have a 32 year ply Shefflera, which is nearly 8′ tall.
The new leaves come out strong looking. Then they begin to turn black and each petal falls off. The stem remains on the trunk.
This has happened with the last three sets of new leaves formed.
I have owned this plant it’s whole life. It has been in the same location for 30 years.
I don’t know why the leaves are dying. I think the plant is root bound.
What do you think or know about this problem.

Has the temperature changed to below 50 degrees F (10 C). A drop in temperature can cause the black, dropping leaves.

It could be due a pot change as you say. You can refresh the soil and trim the roots a bit.
