Q.Shallow Soil
Hi I have been creating a perrenial border and have found at the back of the border there is only shallow soil and a massive concrete path o something under it…i have lost some of the plants i planted last year as i didnt know this. Could you tell me what tall plants (perrenials preferably) can be planted there? shallow rooted? thanks a lot

A university extension publication cited these shallow rooted perennials -- mums (Chrysanthemum spp.), Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum spp.), Coreopsis (Coreopsis spp.), blanket flower (Gaillardia spp.) and painted daisies (Tanacetum spp.).
Shallow rooted plants are prone to heaving out of the soil in winter, so be sure they are mulched well. Annuals are an option because they won't get too deep rooted in one season and you won't have to worry about winter heaving. If you plant them in spring they are less likely to heave out of the soil during winter.
