Shade Plants

What ground covers and plants can I grow under evergreen trees? I have both Blue Spruce and Pine trees. They drop lots of needles and pine cones. They are at least 40 year old trees. The bottom branches are at least 6 feet from the ground so there is room for larger plants. I want to plant a mixture of plants, both in height and type.
