Shade plants

We have the bottom part of a waterfall that we have filled with planting mix and need to find out what kinds of plants we can put in there for some color. The area gets some light but not bright sunlight and is under a St. Mary’s Magnolia with vinca and a few ferns growing around it. We live in zone 17 in California. There is also some dark green leafed plant the size and shape of a hand just behind that area.
