Shade Loving Shrubs

We live in the central valley of California and are needing an evergreen shrub that will tolerate shade and acidic soil. The objective is to cover the appearance of our backyard fence and the space above the fence to screen out the sound/view of our neighbor’s yard. In addition, the shrubs will be in back of and under Aptos blue redwood trees. Any suggestions? We have thought of wax-leaf privet and escalonia, but did not know if they would get 8 plus feet tall.
