sago palm

There is a small sago palm growing up from my mature plant. Can it be transplanted?

Yes, you can transplant it. You can separate it (the ‘pup’) now from the mother plant, wash it off, and trim off any leaves and roots. Set the pup in a cool, dry place for a week or so for it to harden off (toughen up). After a week get a pot that is only an inch or two wider in diameter than the pup itself and fill it with half perlite/half peat moss mix (a pre-packaged light soil mix would work also). Put the pup on top of the soil mix and press it down until only half of it is below the surface of the soil. Water it thoroughly only once. From that point on, only water it when the soil becomes dry. It may take a few months before leaves and roots will form. Once signs of growth appear then you can water it more often.
