Seeking Advice on Seed Germination

Hello. I’m having a problem with germinating my Ephedra sinica houseplant. I followed the instructions that came with the seeds: 50% sand, 50% soil mixture, moderate watering, plenty of light, both natural and high pressure sodium. At first I covered the pot with a sheet of plastic to create a greenhouse-like atmosphere, but after approximately 11 days with no results. I removed the plastic covering, due to worry that the plastic sheeting may have been the cause of the problem. The information provided by the seed company advised that sprouting should begin on average after 11 days. It has been almost one full month and still no sprouting action. Is there any (organic) way to help my seeds advance?

I have read that adding epsom salt to the soil when watering may help but I don’t want to inadvertently harm them. Any good advice will certainly be appreciated. Thanks so very much!

Hi Anju,

I admit that I don’t know anything about Ephedra sinica seeds, but generally speaking germination could be affected if you didn’t plant seeds at the correct depth. You may want to dig up one of the seeds and see what it looks like. If you have done everything as the instructions said, your seeds may, unfortunately, not be viable.

Good luck,
