Schefflera Stem

Hello,

I noticed my Schefflera stem becoming black however starting from the top which is quite strange as I would imagine any stem rot or sinilar would be noticed from the bottom. It had been a longer stem before but with some black bits on the top I thought to stop the spread by cutting off the infected area. It seems to have started again, any idea what this may be or how to remedy?

This is a fungal infection. This is usually caused by overwatering, but can just be present in the soil. You can use wettable sulfur and dolomitic lime to treat this. Just apply to the soil according to the instructions. You will want to continue to cut any infected parts with sharp shears that are sterilized. This can help stop the spread of infection.

I checked the roots, there is only one that is a bit brown. Otherwise I find it strange that overwatering would be the culprit as I usually do it once a week or waiting for the top of the soil to dry. I cut off the infected part and the blackness seems to have abated but the hole on top of the propagation seems to be deepening. You suggest I cut again then rub the wound with this wettable sulfur and lime? Also do you suggest I change the soil?
