Scale insect control

Last year the scale insect destroyed my cucumbers. Would it be wise to spray that small garden spot before plant this spring?

I wouldn’t, unnecessary pesticides are not good for your garden; it is part of the reason some pests are so hard to get rid of sometimes – they develop a resistance to the chemicals, which makes them harder to eliminate – I know it is a matter of choice – just offering my opinion. 🙂 To help avoid recurring pests, practice crop rotation, ie do not plant any plants that belong to the same family in the same or nearby spots, it’s not a guarantee, but it does help significantly. Also, look into trying to find a cucumber variety that is resistant to scale – normally this means you will have to order online, generally the seeds and plants available in local home depots and nurseries are limited to 2 or 3 varieties, and often there is not any additional information available to the consumer, other than the name and planting dates. If you can find a good supplier for the region you live in, it can be a huge help to your gardening success. They usually have quite a bit of information available to help you select varieties by the characteristics that might matter to you/your area, such as resistance to certain insects or plant diseases, size of mature plants, that sort of thing. Neem Oil is a good, organic treatment against Scale. Neem Oil is safe for people, pets and Bees.
