Sap on tree

There is sap coming out of the tree trunk. The tree wasn’t damaged in any way. Any idea what the problem is and what we should do about it? I’ve attached a picture of the tree and a close-up of the sap.

Thanks!

Your tree has developed a canker, caused by a fungus or bacteria.
Proper care of the tree and keeping the tree watering, fertilized and properly pruned are key.
