Sand in Ponds

I heard that one must use sand when installing a new pond. The pond package did not come with instructions. My question is, does the sand go underneath the plastic or on top of the plastic? I thank you very much!

While it’s not something that’s an absolute requirement, most people do opt for adding a generous layer of sand BENEATH the pond liner. This article should help with basic instructions: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/projects/how-to-build-a-small-pond.htm [1]
