The most well-known inhabitant of the Saguaro cactus is the Gila woodpecker which bores holes into the saguaro. These holes heal, cause no serious damage to the saguaro and become the familiar “boots” (nesting sites for the woodpeckers and for several species of birds including small owls). This is the natural ecology of mature saguaros.
