Q.Sago Palms, Brown Scales

Anonymous added on July 10, 2011 | Answered

I have a sago palm that has developed brown, round, dry spots. I live in Kansas City, so I winter the plant inside. The first year it did fine, but this past winter it developed round, 3-dimensional brown spots. It is still getting new growth, also getting the brown spots, but I’ve lost most of the old leaves. I’ve taken a glove and wiped off the spots (they come off very easily) only to have them return. Any hope to save it?

Your plant has scale. Try pruning out the discolored leaves. Here is an article or two that you may find helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/sago-palm/how-to-care-for-sago-palms.htm (scroll to bottom for scale info)
