Sago Palm Flower

I have 4 beautiful sago palms that are about 12 years old and in excellent health. I recently noticed on each one of them they have produced a long, somewhat slim stem like a core in the center of the plant. The core resembles, without the thorns, a pineapple. Below the stem it appears as if more palm leaves or shoots will grow later. What is the stem, and do I or can I take it out, let it flower or will it discard itself?
